About the Hosts
Dr. Anna Everett is an Emeritus Professor at the University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB), and an elected member and current Vice President of the Santa Barbara City College Board of Trustees. She is a former board member of the National Association of Commissions for Women, and former two-term Commissioner and chair of the County of Santa Barbara Commission for Women. Dr. Everett has served as an Interim Associate Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity, and Academic Policy, Department chair of Film and Media Studies, and Director of the Center for Black Studies all at UCSB. She is an internationally renowned media historian, and an award-winning author with numerous scholarly publications in film, TV, and new media technologies focusing on race and gender representations. She is a Ford Foundation Senior Fellow, and a two-time recipient of the Fulbright Senior Scholar Award, a MacArthur Foundation Subject Area Expert, among other honors and awards. Her many publications include the books Returning the Gaze: A Genealogy of Black Film Criticism, 1909-1949; Learning Race and Ethnicity: Youth and Digital Media; AfroGeeks: Beyond the Digital Divide; Digital Diaspora: A Race for Cyberspace, among many others.
Assatu Wisseh is a PhD candidate in the UCSB Film and Media Studies department, a digital archives specialist, and an educator. She approaches her work in critical media studies including media histories, media criticism, archival practice, and digital humanities through the lenses of Black feminisms and Critical Race Theory (CRT). Her research expertise is in the methods and theories of both the humanities and social sciences. Examining the historical interactions between coloniality and media infrastructures, apparatuses, and geographies is her main focus of interest. Her scholarly research articles and presentations center on the ways misinformation about Black bodies, Black spaces, and Black cultures have historically been articulated to displacement and other forms of marginalization.
